In the midst of a very busy summer season, we have had a wonderful 4th of July week together as a family. On Friday, we spontaneously decided to take a last minute day trip to Charleston since it is so close to us. The kids LOVED the beach and playing in the fountains downtown and Steve and I enjoyed walking down at the Battery and eating at our favorite NY style pizza place. The week culminated for Ian by getting to ride horses today that a family in our church owns. He's been looking forward to this for weeks and did surprisingly well for his first time. We are very thankful for the special things the Lord allowed us to do as a family this week since Steve will be away preaching for three out of the next four weeks.

I have recently gotten into 'couponing.' I have been amazed at the money I've saved recently at both drugstores and grocery stores. Here are my bargains for today from my grocery shopping. The sale prices on these items would total close to $30 and with my coupons my total came to 84 cents. Yes, only 84 cents for all the stuff pictured above. (and 2 bars of Olay soap that got left out of the picture.) At Kroger, they actually owed me 21 cents back after my purchase. Wow, I've never had a negative at a grocery store before! Ian was so excited to wake up to his monkey balloon this morning. It looks as big as a Macy's Thanksgiving Day Balloon next to him but he thinks it's great! He's been doing "Step-in-Time" with Monkey all day----Steve and I are thrilled he has a someone else to do it with for a while. We get worn out "Steppin-Timing" all day!

Myrtle Beach Vacation

The Lord provided for us a three day vacation this week to Myrtle Beach. We had such a great time. Our villa and resort were beautiful and had lots of fun things for the kids to do. The kids took their first trip to Gatti Town yesterday. They had such a great time. Ian especially enjoyed all the rides and games, and we found out when we got there that it was "Free Ride on the Carousel Tuesday!" We took advantage of that and rode it a couple of times. During lunch they got to watch a movie on the big screen while they enjoyed their pizza. It was a fun outing, compliments of Honey and Pappy.

Lentil Chili Recipe

Here's a great recipe for those who are looking for a slight variation on normal chili. A lady made this for me when I was traveling several years ago, and I tried making it myself after I got married. It's become a favorite family recipe now! The recipe makes enough to freeze some for later.

Lentil Chili (10 servings)

1 onion
1 pound ground turkey
1 pound dry lentils
10 cups of water
29 oz. can crushed tomatoes
2 cups prepared salsa
1 tsp. ground cumin
1 tsp. chili powder
2 tsp. salt
grated cheddar cheese (optional)

Chop onion. Spray a 5 quart pot with non-stick cooking spray. Add onion. Cover and cook over medium-low heat until tender (about 5 minutes).

Crumble in turkey and cook until opaque. Add lentils and water. Reduce heat to low and simmer one and a half hours.

Add tomatoes, salsa, cumin, chili powder, and salt. Simmer fifteen minutes.

Garnish with cheese before serving.

Snow Day

We (the kids and I) headed to Greenville for the big snow day on Tuesday and unfortunately, the forcasters were wrong, and we ended up getting nothing. Although we didn't get to see or play in the snow, we all had a great day and Ian's highlight was getting to build a fire with Pappy and roast marshmallows. They actually ended up getting more snow at our house in Columbia---only a slight dusting, though. Here are some memories of our day . . .

It was a beautiful warm, sunny day today (in the upper 70's) and we all needed some 'daddy' time, so we took a picnic to the park. We grabbed McDonalds and a blanket and had a wonderful time! Ian got to run around and while he was gone Hailey got to steal sips of his orange soda, so both kids were happy.

We have been without internet here at the house for a few weeks now . . .which explains why there have been no updates recently. Thankfully, we just got wireless hooked up yesterday and I'm now a very happy mommy! Here are a few random pictures of the kids over the past month and I'm attaching a link to our facebook pictures of Hailey's birthday party at my parent's house. Hope you're enjoying the holiday season as much as we are here. We've already attempted taking Ian to see Santa once but he got scared at the last minute. He seems to be warming up to the idea so we'll see if we can't make it happen before the holidays are over!

Hailey has really been curious about the piano lately. She'll crawl up on one side and play for a while and then crawl over to the other side and play as well. It's really cute.
Since we had her big 1 year old party at my parent's house a week after her real birthday we thought we'd do just little celebration as our house. Here's a little cake just for her that she was very excited about eating.

Happy Halloween

We had a fun time celebrating Halloween today. Ian especially enjoyed going trick or treat for the first time. I took the kids to the park today in their costumes and actually got Ian to stay still for some good shots --it doesn't happen very often, so that is why there are so many pics of him. While carving our pumpkin this afternoon Ian decided he didn't want to watch anymore because he said that the pumpkin was "dirty and smelled yucky." He always gives us a good laugh! It was a fun day and Ian now has lots of candy to remember it by for many days to come.

Our church just started building a new Sunday School Building. A man in our church is the contractor for the job. He told Ian yesterday that if we came by the church that he'd give him a ride on his bulldozer. I ended up being over at the church this morning for a music practice and Ian was able to go out on a ride with Mr. Booth. Ian has loved bulldozers for some time now and this was definitely his dream come true. He talked about it all day. Mr. Booth gave him a ride around the parking lot, let him drive and raise the buckets up and down. I think we'll be going back for another visit sometime soon!

We had a fun time today at Harmon's Pumpkin Patch. There was a lot to do besides picking out pumpkins as you'll see in the pictures below.

Ian was excited getting to pick out his own little pumpkin. He told us that he wants it to grow big to be 4 years old.

It turned out to be a beautiful day when we went apple picking at Sky Top in Flat Rock, NC. Unlike last year, there were tons of apples. Hailey had fun licking her apple since she wasn't going to get much chomping done with only one tooth. Ian had a sampling of all the different kinds of apples and he didn't even end up getting sick after such an exorbitant intake. It's a fun tradition that we look forward to every year in the fall. We came back with lots of delicious apples and have already enjoyed one apple pie and apple crisp . . .with plenty left over to make more this week.

Beach Vacation

We had a great week at Hilton Head. Our family was definitely due for some time together and away. The whole week was a lot of fun from spending time on the beach to swimming in the pool and, of course, Rita's Italian Ice. Tropical storm Fay was threatening throughout the week but we actually had great weather with it not being too hot and the rain we did get never prevented us from doing anything we wanted to do. Our villa was beachfront so every room had tremendous views of the ocean which was nice for watching the dolphins which came every evening. Steve actually got within 15 feet of them. My parents joined us for the week and it was great having them there. You can see more pictures at:

Steve had the day off today, so we decided to go to the Children's Museum here in Columbia called EdVenture. The month of July is Steve's month to be preaching away at camps. It is so nice that we live close enough to my parent's house for the kids and I to spend time with family while he is gone.

My grandmother from Maryland came for a three week visit and we had such a wonderful time with her. She came down to Irmo to visit us for a weekend while she was here. Ian especially enjoyed playing games with her, singing songs, counting cars, swinging on the swing, watching birds, taking walks, and many other wonderful things that only great-grandmothers can come up with to keep a two year olds attention. We are looking forward to more visits from her again in the near future.

We wondered what was going on when we noticed a 'small river' coming out of our neighbors driveway a few days ago. Steve went over to check and it turns out that a waterline had broken underneath her driveway. It took a couple days for the water department to come and fix it, so it turned into a morning of entertainment for a two year old and his mommy.

The highlight of the mornings entertainment came when they broke through the driveway and the water was shooting probably 30-40 feet in the air and 100 feet away. Of course, the guys with the shovels turned it on the guy with the backhoe and the group of men were turned into boys for a few minutes while they had a water fight. They finally got it fixed but our poor neighbor's driveway is now torn up.

One of the things we didn't realize about our new house until the spring arrived was the many beautiful flowers that the home owner before us planted. It has been so nice having fresh flowers to bring into the house every couple of days. The roses have been gorgeous and I can hardly wait for my hydrangea bush out front to bloom.

I don't sew (& wish I could) but tried my hand at making this coffee table runner to match our new chair. Very simple project but makes a huge impact!

This is our latest bargain. We found this arm chair at a furniture store warehouse sale and got it for only $20. We recovered the cushion and it looks like new.

Ever had a bad hair morning? Ian came into our bedroom this morning looking like this. I had to get a picture because it looked so funny. As you can tell, he's not quite awake yet:-)

Poor little Ian has been fighting a fever for almost a week now. Here's a picture of his favorite 'sick spot' while watching one of his favorite movies "Frosty the Snowman."

I have been on a constant quest to find a way for Hailey to be able to wear the bows I've made her. I found these headbands on etsy.com (cool craft website) really cheap and made my own flower clips and bows to go on them. It turned out really cute. By the way, if your looking for cheap flowers, check with stores for ones that have fallen off arrangements. I got mine for 25 cents each.

We took a little mini vacation this last week before our busy summer schedule begins. Instead of going away we stayed at home and did day trips----much easier and enjoyable with two kids! Here are some pics of our fun times.

'Man' Time

Ian and Steve had their first 'Man" time outing (as Steve likes to call it) tonight. Steve had a Cross Impact tailgating activity at a USC baseball game and took Ian along with him. This was Ian's first baseball game and he loved it. He especially enjoyed watching Cocky, the USC mascot, dance--This was the first thing he wanted to tell me about when he got home.

Today he decided to move on to Step #3: Throw away the Pacifier. He was only using it for bedtime but now that's he's two we decided to time had come to really take it away. After considering several options, we decided that for Ian, the best option would just be to do away with it quickly. He has always looked forward to 'trash day' on Thursdays, so we thought it would be good if he threw it away himself and watched the trashman take it away. We prepped him two days ahead and this morning he woke up ready to give his "pa" (as he calls it) to the garbage man. Surprisingly, he threw it away with no problem and waved to the trashman as he carried it away.
Now, one step left . . . potty training. That will have to wait a few months:-)

The best shoes for kids . . .

I wanted to make a quick review on crocs. I think they are absolutely the best shoes for kids. They are very easy to keep clean and super easy to get on and off. Ian loves taking his shoes off and it can get frustrating quickly to keep having to tie and double knot his shoes. These shoes slide on easily and when they get dirty you can just hose them off. They stay looking great even after playing in the mud. Also, if you don't have to have 'name brand' you can get them for as cheap as $5 a pair. It's a great summer shoe and I highly recommend them.

You can also accessorize with little buttons (which you can get at the dollar store).

We had a great time getting to see Living Gallery at BJU this weekend. Ben had the opportunity of getting to be a model in the last painting of Christ at the Resurrection. We were able to go back stage to see him afterwards. Here's a picture of Steve and I with Ben all painted up (he was Christ in the painting). When Ian sees this picture he always says "Jonah." I guess they did a good job of making him look like a Bible character:-)

It's hard to believe that Ian is 2 years old already. He is such a fun little boy and we are so grateful for the Lord's blessing to us through giving him to our family. We had a wonderful time celebrating his birthday with family this year. He loved every part of it, especially blowing out the candles which he requested to do several times. The kids are growing up so fast. Ian slept in his 'big boy bed' for the first time 2 days ago and, amazingly enough, only got out of bed once and slept for 2 hours. Hailey has taken to her fingers and doesn't really want her pacifier anymore . . .it looks cute now but I hope it doesn't give her weird looking teeth (like some say happens). We also moved into our new house this past Saturday and are enjoying owning our first home and getting it all set up. We will post pictures of that at another time once we get everything arranged and hung on the walls.

Ian and I made play-doh last week and had so much fun. This is a very easy recipe and it turned out really good. Just wanted to share it with all you moms who are looking for something else to fill up the time before the afternoon nap:-)

3 cups flour
1/3 cup salt
2 tbsp. vegetable oil
1 cup water
7 drops of food coloring

Mix the dry ingredients with oil
Add food coloring to water and mix
Add water to other mixture (add 1/4 cup at a time)
Kneed with hands

Use cookie cutters for different shapes and for 'mess-free' fun, play with it on cookie sheets.

I don't get out to yard sales very often but got to check out one in our neighborhood last Saturday. One of the good bargains that I found was this popsicle maker. We let Ian test one out tonight and he loved it - even if it was a little cool outside to be eating a popsicle! The thing I like most about it is the little sippy straw that is attached to catch all the melted juice. It's a nice feature to help prevent a sticky mess when it's over and done with.

Our New Home

After many months of searching the Lord has led us to purchase this home in Irmo. We are so thankful for the Lord's direction. We have learned so much in this process and the Lord has used it to make us even more dependent on Him. It has been wonderful to see how the Lord has provided and we are so thankful for the many godly people who have helped us and given us wise counsel. We have signed the contract, finished the home inspection and everything is a 'go' at this point. We are scheduled to close on the house on February 15. We had an unusually beautiful snow here in South Carolina last night. This was Ian's first time to play in the snow. Although we didn't have appropriate snow gear, he still enjoyed his time and didn't seem to get too chilled. In this holiday season of giving we are always mindful of the greatest gift that God has given us, the gift of salvation through His Son. Our family has been so blessed in this past year with watching Ian continue to grow and develop and with the birth of our daughter, Hailey, a month ago. They are a daily reminder of God's love for us. Their preciousness to us has been brought even more into focus in the last few days as we have discovered that Hailey has a health issue that will require surgery tomorrow morning. The surgery should last about an hour and we would ask our friends and family to be praying about a few specific things.

1. That the Great Physician would guide the surgeon and his team

2. That there would not be the presence of infection

3. That her recovery would go well and be speedy

4. That we would have opportunities to be a witness and a testimony to the doctors and nurses

For the curious - Ian is loving life because he got to go and stay with his Grandmommy and Granddaddy for a couple of days.

We are pleased to announce the arrival of Hailey Faith. She was born at 11:21 am today and is very healthy and doing well. She weighed 7 lbs. 11 oz. and was 19 1/4 inches long. Everyone is doing wonderful and Ian enjoyed getting to meet 'Sissy' in person this afternoon. We are so thankful to the Lord for giving us the privilege of raising this little girl for His glory! We are pleased to announce that (unless she decides to come early), Hailey Faith will be arriving sometime Tuesday. My doctor told me at my appointment that my body looked ready and since I have been progressing for the last several weeks, I am going to be induced at 5:30am on Tuesday morning, Nov. 20. We are very excited. We'll get home on Thanksgiving with a wonderful 'Thanksgiving present' from the Lord.

Needless to say, we have been rapidly trying to prepare and gets things together this past week. We've almost finished our Christmas shopping, decorated for Christmas, covered church responsibilities, organized all winter clothing for the kids, etc. My mom will be coming from Greenville to help out for a while which we are very thankful for. She spent 2 weeks with us when I had Ian and was a tremendous help. Ian knows that "sissy" is coming but I can hardly wait for him to meet her. We'll definitely have to catch it on video.

I am feeling well and am just recently recovering from an unexpected bout of food poisoning. Steve and I went to Chick Fil' A after my doctors appointment and apparently there was something in the chicken nuggets. I have been confined to the bed and the bathroom for the last 24 hours but am finally able to keep down toast and gatorade. I am very thankful for renewed strength.

We'll post pictures of her once she arrives. Hopefully the hospital has wireless, but I don't know for sure. We would appreciate your prayers for a safe and healthy delivery.

Our church gave me a baby shower last week. The ladies were very kind and generous and Hailey has some very cute clothes to wear. It's looking like everything is on schedule as far as her delivery date and maybe just a bit ahead - according to the doctor. So, she should be arriving pretty soon! We're excited. Ian keeps pointing to Hailey's clothes and Moses basket (where she will sleep) and says "sissy." So, although, I'm not sure he knows who sissy is or what's about to happen, he does know that she's been getting a lot of cool gifts lately.

Steve and I love fall harvest parties. We decided to have one for our Singles Sunday school class at church. We ended up with a good turn out and everyone had a great time. We had a chili dinner, costume contest, and pumpkin carving. This was Ian's first time to dress up so he really enjoyed all the festivities and attention.

I'm posting a recipe for a Big Chocolate Chip Cookie. I've made it several times now and it seems to be a hit . . . and best of all, it's really easy!
1 yellow cake mix
1/2 cup oil
2 tbsp. water
2 eggs, beaten
1 cup chocolate chips
Combine and bake for 25 minutes at 350 degrees. I use the store bought icing and it works out well and tastes just like the American Cookie Company icing.

We went to the South Carolina State Fair on Saturday. My parents were able to come from Greenville for the day. We had such a great time. It was the best fair that Steve or I have ever been to - good food, rides, and exhibitions.

First Time Bowling

On Friday night our USC Cross Impact campus group had a bowling activity. After wiggling around and saying "ball" for a long time, Steve decided to give Ian a chance to try his hand at bowling.

I met Andrea this past spring at a public school carnival where we were inviting kids to our summer VBS. I talked with her for a while and invited her son to VBS and their family to our church. They were looking for a new church at the time. She brought her son, Isaiah, for the entire week of Vacation Bible School. He trusted Christ as his Savior that week and Andrea and her husband, Steve, started visiting the church after that. "My" Steve had the opportunity to meet with them for a period of several weeks to answer many spiritual questions that they had since they were coming from a Lutheran background. He gave them the gospel on several occasions and they continued coming to church seeking answers. On our church "Friend Day" back in August, Steve and Andrea both prayed to receive Christ as their Savior. Steve had the opportunity to baptize the whole family tonight at church. It was so exciting to see the Lord draw them to Himself and save their entire family.

We spent the day with my parents in Flat Rock, NC at Sky Top Orchard. Unfortunately, due to an early frost, high temperatures this summer, and drought there were no apples to pick from the trees. But, we didn't let that stop us from having a great time. We packed a picnic lunch, pulled Ian around in his wagon, and let him explore the orchard. It really is a great place and we will look forward to going back again next year when, hopefully, there will be more apples.

My newest craft project has been learning to make little bitty baby bows. I had a friend teach me a few weeks ago and it's turned out to be a really fun project. I've also decided to start making them for baby shower gifts. We have a girl in our church who is having a baby girl this month, so the bows below are ones that I made to go with an outfit that I bought for her little girl. Once you get the hang of it, it doesn't take much time at all to actually make them and for the price that it costs you to buy them at a store, it is totally worth it and very inexpensive to do yourself.

Summer Vacation at Last!

We took a week away before things geared up again for the fall. We were able to head to Kentucky to visit Steve's family for a few days and then finished out the week in Pigeon Forge, TN. We had a great time in Kentucky even though we had a car accident on Wednesday morning on the way back from grabbing some Starbucks coffee and ended up in the hospital for several hours while the baby was monitored. Everything turned out to be fine except for the car which will go to the shop next week for repairs which will take several weeks.

Steve was ordained the Sunday evening before we left on vacation and the church surprised us with a two night stay at the Blue Mountain Mist Bed and Breakfast and Cottages in Sevierville, TN. The church had also lined up to have my parents come and pick up Ian for those days as well. It was nice because we were in a separate cottage where they delivered breakfast to our door every morning. We had a wonderful time and it was so relaxing.

Steve left Wednesday, August 8, for a missions trip to San Antonio La Paz, Guatemala. For a week he joined other people from our church in building the second floor to Iglesia Bautista Independente Peniel (Jacob's Ladder Independent Baptist Church). He also had the opportunity to preach there on two Wednesday nights and a Sunday evening. He preached Sunday morning at a different church in Guatemala City. The highlight of the trip for Steve was the last night they were there when the mother of the deacon in the church prayed to accept Christ. He got back safe on Thursday, August 16 after leaving San Antonio La Paz at 3 am, spending 30 minutes completely stopped in traffic, having his flight cancelled in Houston due to a tropical storm, getting the last seat on a flight into Greenville, and finally arriving at 7 pm with no luggage. Typical Steve story!

While Steve is in Guatemala for the next week, Ian and I are spending some time with my family. We took Ian downtown to the fountains at Reedy River. He loved playing in the water and running through the fountains. It is a great place to take kids!

We had a great time getting to be at Phil Trach and Rachel Penix's wedding in Greenville, SC. The wedding was beautiful and God-glorifying. Steve had the opportunity to do the 'charge' to Phil and Rachel. They are dear friends and it has been exciting to see the Lord at work in both of their lives and how He brought them together.
